"Why
do you paint Native Americans?" is a question frequently asked of
artist Bruce Rothfuss.
"Native American subject matter encompasses all that I find
intriguing and challenging as a painter. Faces and physical
forms, the shapes of their dwellings, colors, animals, landscapes and
personal adornments all combine to enhance one another in a painting
that, when well executed is personally very satisfying. The
wildness or naturalness of their life-styles suites my rather
"painterly" brushwork and immersion into the historical
events of their culture past is a continuous source of thematic
ideas."
"My concentration on Native American subject matter began about
twenty years ago when I was commissioned by a family friend, a museum
curator, to do a portrait series of Native American notables and
chiefs. These paintings were well received and sparked my
interest in painting Native Americans and "The West", which
has been my primary artistic focus ever since."
Bruce feels very fortunate to be
painting "the West at a time when a reexamination and
clarification of Western U.S. history is taking place. I am
grateful to be able to personally validate a nationwide interest, for
my paintings are in private collections throughout the country."
